Altskeith Country House nestles on the shores of beautiful Loch Ard. Set amidst the glorious Trossachs National Park, Altskeith enjoys one of the best positions in Scotland’s first National Park. Edinburgh and Glasgow are an hour’s drive away.
At Altskeith you will find yourself surrounded by the most spectacular scenery. The wonderful ‘Bens’ of the Trossachs: Ben Lomond, Ben Venue, Ben Vorlich, Ben Ledi and Ben A’an also the romantic Lochs including Loch Lomond, Loch Katrine, Loch Achray, Loch Venachar, Loch Drunkie and of course Loch Ard. All are within half an hour’s drive.
From our beach you can row, canoe, sail and windsurf on the Loch or even swim. Loch Ard is stunning, with small islands and a crannog to explore.
We can offer trout fishing on Loch Ard and can arrange for a ghillie to show you many other beautiful lochs in the area. Within walking distance of the house, you can play tennis, go mountain biking, hike into the hills.
The area surround Altskeith Country has is a photographer’s paradise and there are many excellent walks and cycle paths to guide you through the renowned Queen Elizabeth Forest Park. Golfers will find beautiful gold courses nearby. For the more adventurous, we can even organise falconry and clay pigeon shooting.
Within 30 minutes drive you can take a cruise on Loch Katrine or Loch Lomond, visit historic Stirling Castle, see William Wallace’s sword at the magnificent Wallace Monument and sample Scotland’s national drink at the Glengoyne Distillery or Deanston Distillery close by.
Blair Drummond Safari Park is located approximately 30 minutes drive from Altskeith close to Stirling, which also has the fabulous Stirling Castle and Wallace Monument. Briarlands Farm is located just beside Blair Drummond.
This can be arranged at Go Country the local water sports park less than 1 mile from the house.
Ceilidh & Scottish Musicians
Enjoy a Scottish Ceilidh in the function room. A caller will call out the dance steps and guide you through the song. Ceilidh’s usually include a fiddler, drummer and guitarist.
Clay Pigeon Shooting
We can arrange for you to visit a local farm to experience this fun experience.
We welcome cyclists and are able to provide a hose pipe and storage for their bike if required.
Around Loch Ard is a popular cyclist route and there are numerous trails all of a variety of levels. In Aberfoyle is a newly opened bike park with different levels of difficulty for the cycling enthusiastic. Bikes may be available for use at Altskeith Country House or a alternatively in Aberfoyle. The National cycle route passes through Aberfoyle.
Doune Castle was the home of Robert Stewart, the 1st Duke of Albany. He was ruler of Scotland, in all but name, from 1388 until his death in 1420.
Aberfoyle Golf Course is located 3.5 miles from Altskeith has an 18 hole course, which is open to visitors to the area.
Permits to fish on Loch Ard are available and we can hire our boats for a fishing expedition on the Loch and may be a row over to one of the islands for a picnic lunch.
Alternatively the Lake of Menteith is very popular with fishing enthusiasts. Boats can be booked, but we recommend doing this well in advance during peak months.
Trout is available in both lakes.
Castle Redneck Farm is hill farm located just outside Aberfoyle. It offers pony trekking and also has a segways.
Inchmahome Priory set on an island in the Lake of Menteith, is an idyllically situated Augustinian monastery dating from 1328.
Loch Katrine is the home of the steamship “Sir Walter Scott” a great cruise for scenery and photography enthusiasts.
Mini Highland Games
Scotland’s Highland Games are world famous for celebrating Scottish sporting tradition. We can arrange this to take place locally or on our own lawns in the grounds.
Castle Redneck Farm is hill farm located just outside Aberfoyle. It offers segway as well as pony trekking.
Stars at Night
With low pollution in the area its not usual to have stunning views of the moon and a clear view of the stars at night. Head down to the beach and look up at the stars enjoying the waves against the shore.
Stirling Castle is a great symbol of Scottish independence & a source of national pride. Knights, nobles and foreign ambassadors once flocked to the Royal Court at Stirling Castle to revel in the castle’s grandeur.
Swimming Pool & Spa
We are a short walk or drive from a hotel and spa and can arrange for you to use the pool and spa facilities.
Loch Ard has a vast selection of walking routes. Our favourite is to walk from the house around the Loch and back to the house. A nice steady walk but it gives you full advantage
Water Sports Park/Outdoor Adventure
Go Country, a short walk from Altskeith provides a whole range of outdoor activities, including the water park, with the ‘iceberg’. Quad biking, canoeing, climbing/abseiling, life jumping, archery and mountaineering biking and orienteering are a selection of the vast activities on offer.
Two popular distilleries located within a short driving distance are Deanston Distillery near Doune and Glengoyne Distillery is located 12 miles away at Dumgoyne. Both offer tours by arrangement and you can mix your own whisky at Glengoyne and bring it home to sample.
Enjoy a whisky tasting evening held in the house and learn about the origins of the world’s most historic drink.
Ducks, swans, squirrels, family of deers and a variety of birds including owls are often seen in the gardens and woodland at the back of the property.
Go Ape, the longest zip wire and hire wire forest adventure. An ideal option for groups to explore together is located just outside Aberfoyle at the David Marshall Lodge. A great day out for a group.
